When starting off on Amazon, many sellers can get bombarded with a bunch of tools that they are told they need to use. This may or may not be effective depending on what your focus is on your Amazon business. It’s best to focus and use a small amount of tools that actually drive results for your business. Below are some of the best free tools that Amazon sellers use almost on a daily basis. Let’s explore each one and see what benefits it can provide for your Amazon business.

Amazon seller app: The first free tool is the best one: the Amazon seller app. The Amazon seller app allows you to operate your Amazon business from anywhere with just an internet connection. Many sellers often use a laptop and go to seller central to do most of their daily work. The Amazon seller app allows sellers to do almost everything that seller central can do from the app. This includes product research, seeing daily sales, communicating with customers, reaching seller support and more.

One of the best aspects of the Amazon seller app is that it allows sellers to scan basically any product that has a barcode. If you open the Amazon seller app, you will see a camera button on the upper right hand side. Clicking it will open the camera and you should see some blue dots. This will allow sellers to scan any barcode or scan the front of any book if it doesn’t have a barcode. Amazon will immediately pull up any active listings if the product is sold on Amazon. If it’s not, sellers can list it as a new product.

Sellers can also use the Amazon seller app to manage and fulfill orders. The Amazon seller app notifies sellers every time a sale is made. Sellers can go directly on the app and see which orders they need to manually fulfill. If there are any issues with any orders, sellers can also handle it directly from the app. This saves sellers significant time and they can focus on aspects of their business that directly impacts sales.

The Amazon seller app is available on both the App Store and Google Play Store for free. Sellers that have the professional selling plan and the free selling can both use all of its features for free.

FBA Calculator: The Amazon FBA calculator is one of the best free tools for all Amazon sellers. Sellers should check their inventory with the FBA calculator prior to purchasing or shipping it into Amazon. The Amazon FBA calculator is an open and free tool provided by Amazon that will give you the most accurate estimate of your profitability. Many sellers are not aware of their true profitability and often mistake sales with profitability. Checking the FBA calculator is essential to running a profitable Amazon business.

The Amazon FBA calculator accounts for:

Revenue: The FBA calculator helps estimate the overall revenue you will get from selling a product. The calculator allows you to input the price you’d like to sell it for, how much the product cost and how many products you estimate selling. These are the main factors in calculating the approximate revenue for a product.

Selling on Amazon fees: The first fee that the FBA calculator accounts for is the selling on Amazon fee. The selling on Amazon fees are two: the referral fee and the closing fee. The referral fee is the fee that you pay for Amazon referring their customer to you. The closing fee is the fee you pay upon selling a product. This is about 8-15% of each sale.

Fulfillment cost: The next cost you need to account for is the fulfillment cost. The fulfillment cost is the cost that it takes for Amazon to take the product from its warehouse to the customer. The fulfillment cost applies only to sellers that use FBA to sell their products. Merchant fulfilled sellers don’t have to pay this fee. The fulfillment cost is often the largest cost of any product. It includes the Amazon FBA fee and the cost to ship to Amazon.

Storage costs: The storage costs are the costs associated with keeping your products in an Amazon warehouse for a period of time. The storage costs can vary depending on the time of year and the size of your products. Entering the product into the FBA calculator will let you know just how much this cost may be.

Below is an example of a product entered into the Amazon FBA calculator.

As you can see, the FBA calculator shows you the estimated metrics depending on the product, cost, whether it’s fulfilled by Amazon and more.

You can see that the Amazon FBA calculator leaves no stone unturned when it comes to calculating  actual profit. This is the single best way to actually see how much money you will make from selling any given product. You can try it for free, I’ve linked it here.

JungleScout Sales Estimator: The JungleScout sales estimator is one of the most popular free tools that Amazon sellers use. JungleScout is a company that provides analytics and product research services for Amazon sellers. Many sellers use their paid plans for their Amazon businesses. JungleScout provides a free sales estimator tool that allows sellers to estimate how many sales a product can make based on several factors. These factors include:

Best sellers rank: The best sellers rank is a number provided by Amazon on every single listing. It’s calculated based on current and historical sales. The lower that number is, the more sales a product makes. The best sellers rank can be found on the bottom of listings in the “product details” section.

The best sellers rank is the first number in the broader category. On this product, it’s #279 in Sports & Outdoors. Using the other numbers (like #36, #12, #26) will give you wrong estimates of sales.

Marketplace: The next thing you need to input in the JungleScout sales estimator is the marketplace in which you are selling the product. The marketplace is the country you are selling in like United States, United Kingdom, etc. This is important to have correct because the sales demand is different between countries. For example, the sales for a country like U.S. is much higher than Spain. Make sure this is correct before entering in.

Category: Next, you’ll have to select the appropriate category for the product you are researching. The sales for  a product varies based upon the category. More competitive categories like electronics will have higher sales for the same best sellers rank in comparison to another category. Select the right category for your product and you can finally calculate sales.

Once you have put in the best sellers rank, marketplace and category, JungleScout will give you an estimate of the amount of sales that product makes per month.

As you can see, a product with a best sellers rank of 20,000 in the home and kitchen category in the U.S. will do about 1,170 sales per month. If there are multiple sellers on that listing, the sales will likely be divided by them.

Since Amazon doesn’t share the actual sales numbers of listings, JungleScout is the best free alternative that sellers use. It’s very accurate for the most part and sellers of all sizes use it for product research.

Keepa: Keepa is a great tool that sellers can use to check the history of a product. The Amazon best sellers rank is a great metric to gauge the sales of a product, but it can fluctuate greatly depending on a variety of factors. This can include seasonality, if Amazon runs out of stock and more. Sellers who are looking to make a serious investment into a product should definitely check Keepa to make sure a product is stable in regards to price and sales. Keepa gives sellers access to a product’s price drops, increases, price history, best sellers rank history and more.

Here’s a sample Keepa graph. The right hand side has labels for important metrics like prices for new and used, Amazon prices and more.

Almost every seller that does any amount of product research uses Keepa to ensure if a product is a good buying decision or not. It’s free and linked here; there’s also a paid option if you want more extensive data on a product.

Camelcamelcamel: CamelCamelCamel is another great free Amazon tools that sellers can use. Like Keepa, it can show price drops for products, price history and it even has a browser extension. CamelCamelCamel does price tracking for the vast majority of products on Amazon and it supports many languages so it can be used in other Amazon marketplaces.

All of CamelCamelCamel’s features are free to use for all sellers. It’s a great tool to use along with Keepa to get the most accurate price history for any Amazon product. Below is an example of a CamelCamelCamel graph:

You can see on the right hand side that the different colors represent Amazon’s prices and sellers’ prices. You can change the date range also to get a more broad view of the product.

Keyword Tool:

When creating a listing, having the right keywords can either make or break your product. There’s no point of having a good supplier, good profits, professional photos, etc., if a customer cannot even find your product. Keyword research is one of the most important aspects of having a successful listing. Many websites and applications require sellers to pay for this kind of insight, but Keyword Tool remains one of the best free tools to do keyword research. Keyword Tool leverages Amazon’s autosuggest to help sellers come up with relevant keywords for their listings.

This can be used to optimize keywords or for any other work related to keywords. Sellers can use Keyword Tool for free to do proper keyword research. This is more than enough to ensure your listing has all the right keywords, so that customers can find it. Keyword Tool also has a paid option that allows sellers to get up to 2 times more keywords than the free option. Below is an example of how the tool works:

I searched the terms “yoga mat” and this was the result on Keyword Tool.

After searching for a keyword or several keywords, Keyword Tool will give you the search volume, trends in the keyword’s search, the cost per click (CPC) and the competition of the keyword.

Search volume: The search volume is the number of times that the keyword was searched for in a given month. This is a good indicator of how popular the keyword is.

Trend: The trend metric is important because it shows you how much the keyword volume has changed over the last twelve months. This can indicate the overall growth of the keyword for a product.

CPC: The cost per click (CPC) indicates how much you will pay each time a customer clicks on your advertisement. The higher this is, the more lucrative a keyword is generally.

Competition: The competition metric is between 0-100. The higher that number is, the more competitive the keyword is to rank for. Generally, you want to aim for low to medium competition. Getting high competition can eat up your profits and produce a much lower ROI.

These metrics that Keyword Tool provides are crucial to conducting keyword research for a product. This can be a good starting point if you are interested in a particular product, so you can get an estimate of demand, profitability and more. You can’t rely only on these metrics when investing in a private label product, but it’s certainly a great place to start.

These are just some of the free tools that sellers can use while selling on Amazon. These tools can help with product research, making purchase decisions and more. There are many other paid tools, but it’s best to familiarize yourself with these free tools prior to moving on to paid tools. As a rule of thumb, if any tool you use doesn’t generate a higher ROI for your business, you shouldn’t use it.
